About Zotero

Zotero is a free, open source citation management tool similar to RefWorks.
You can learn more about using Zotero by viewing the helpful LibGuide below created by Jason Puckett of the Georgia State University Library.

You can go directly to the Zotero website to download the free Zotero software: https://www.zotero.org/

Importing References from RefWorks (New and Legacy) to Zotero

  1. Download, install and open Zotero on your computer
  2. Click on My Library in upper left corner
  3. Under File, select Import from the drop-down menu
  4. Accept the default file import setting - A File (BibTeX, RIS, Zotero RDF, etc.)
  5. Click Next button
  6. Select the text file to be imported from the location where it was saved during the export process (Downloads, Desktop, etc)
  7. Click on the Open button
  8. Choose Place imported collection and items into new collection
  9. Choose Copy files to Zotero storage folder
  10. Click the Next button
  11. Click the Finish button
  12. A Collection in Zotero serves the same function as a folder in RefWorks
  13. Under My Library, a new Collection will be created for each imported file of references
  14. If you imported all your references at once, you can now reorganize them into new Collections as needed
  15. If you imported your references folder by folder, you can rename any Collection by using the right-click function
Important: Only references will be imported to Zotero.
PDF files or other documents must be downloaded and reattached individually.
