Information Literacy: The Basics

Information Literacy is used to describe the research skills of identifying, locating, evaluating and using information effectively.

Critical thinking skills are an essential component of your college and university education and are closely related to Information Literacy.

Improving your Information Literacy skills will help you select the most appropriate books, articles, and websites for your assignments (and will likely lead to better grades as well!)

Information Literacy skills are of lifelong value at home, on the job, and elsewhere.

Information Literacy: The Tutorial

This is a self-paced tutorial composed of five (5) sections:

1. Developing Research Topics
2. Understanding Information Sources
3. Searching Effectively
4. Evaluating Information
5. Citing Information

After completing the tutorial, you will be able to:

1. Choose a manageable research topic
2. Distinguish between types of information resources
3. Select appropriate information resources to search
4. Construct effective search strategies
5. Apply specific criteria to evaluate search results
6. Format citations correctly using the recommended style guides
